Game Rules
A beginner-friendly guide to the most popular casino games available at Canadian online casinos.
Online Slots
Online slots are games of pure chance based on random number generation. Each spin produces an entirely random outcome, independent of previous results.
How Slots Work
- Select your bet size (typically C$0.10 to C$100+ per spin)
- Press the spin button to set the reels in motion
- The Random Number Generator (RNG) determines the outcome instantly
- Matching symbols on active paylines or in qualifying patterns create winning combinations
- Special symbols like Wilds (substitute for other symbols) and Scatters (trigger bonus features) add variety
Key Terms
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| RTP | Return to Player — percentage paid back over time (e.g., 96% = C$96 per C$100 wagered on average) |
| Volatility | Risk level — low (frequent small wins), medium (balanced), high (rare large wins) |
| Paylines | Lines on which winning combinations are evaluated |
| Wild | Symbol that substitutes for others to complete winning combinations |
| Scatter | Symbol that triggers bonus features regardless of payline position |
| Free Spins | Bonus rounds where you spin without wagering your own money |
| Multiplier | Feature that multiplies your winnings by a specified factor |
| Progressive Jackpot | A jackpot that grows with each bet placed across a network — Mega Moolah has created multiple Canadian millionaires |
Blackjack
Blackjack is a card game where you compete against the dealer. The goal is to achieve a hand value closer to 21 than the dealer without exceeding it.
Basic Rules
- Number cards (2–10) are worth their face value. Face cards (J, Q, K) are worth 10. Aces count as 1 or 11.
- You receive two cards initially. The dealer receives one face-up and one face-down card.
- Hit: Take another card. Stand: Keep your current hand.
- Double Down: Double your bet and receive exactly one more card.
- Split: If you have two cards of the same value, split them into two separate hands.
- If your hand exceeds 21, you bust and lose automatically.
- The dealer must hit on 16 or below and stand on 17 or above (rules may vary by table).
Tip: Blackjack has one of the lowest house edges of any casino game (around 0.5% with basic strategy). Learning basic strategy charts can significantly improve your odds.
Roulette
Roulette involves betting on where a ball will land on a spinning wheel. European Roulette (single zero) offers better odds than American Roulette (double zero).
Bet Types
| Bet Type | Description | Payout |
|---|---|---|
| Straight Up | Single number | 35:1 |
| Split | Two adjacent numbers | 17:1 |
| Street | Three numbers in a row | 11:1 |
| Corner | Four numbers in a square | 8:1 |
| Red/Black | Colour of the winning number | 1:1 |
| Odd/Even | Whether the number is odd or even | 1:1 |
| 1–18 / 19–36 | Low or high half of numbers | 1:1 |
| Dozens | 1–12, 13–24 or 25–36 | 2:1 |
| Columns | One of three vertical columns | 2:1 |
Baccarat
Baccarat is a straightforward card game where you bet on whether the Player or Banker hand will have a value closer to 9, or if the result will be a Tie.
Basic Rules
- Cards 2–9 are worth face value. 10s and face cards are worth 0. Aces are worth 1.
- If a hand total exceeds 9, the tens digit is dropped (e.g., 15 becomes 5).
- A third card may be drawn automatically based on fixed rules — no player decision required.
- The Banker bet has the lowest house edge (approximately 1.06%).
- Avoid the Tie bet — it carries a house edge of approximately 14.4%.
Live Dealer Games
Live dealer games stream real casino tables to your device via HD video. A professional human dealer manages the game in real time while you place bets through the digital interface.
- Available games typically include blackjack, roulette, baccarat and game show formats like Crazy Time and Monopoly Live.
- Games are provided by specialist studios such as Evolution and Pragmatic Play Live.
- Chat features allow interaction with the dealer and other players.
- All live games at licensed casinos are independently audited for fairness.
- AGCO-licensed operators in Ontario must meet additional standards for live dealer game integrity.
Video Poker
Video poker combines elements of slots and five-card draw poker. You are dealt five cards and choose which to hold and which to discard. Replacement cards are drawn and the final hand determines your payout.
- Common variants include Jacks or Better, Deuces Wild and Double Bonus Poker.
- Optimal strategy varies by variant — strategy charts are available online and significantly reduce the house edge.
- Jacks or Better with optimal play has a house edge of approximately 0.46%, making it one of the best-value casino games available.
Remember: All casino games carry a house edge, meaning the casino has a statistical advantage over time. Never gamble more than you can afford to lose, and always play for entertainment rather than as a means to make money.
